Restored to Nature

Her work focuses on exploring and reflecting “genius loci”—the spirit of place in multi-scale spaces of urban areas through landscape intervention. To this day, there are many important landscape architecture firms that, despite their profound impact on the urban environment, get less coverage than other architects. To put this right, we’ve put together a collection of some of the best landscape designers on the planet. Explore these key firms and their projects, and if your favorite is left out, make sure to let us know in the comments. Situated in the heart of downtown Chicago, the Crown Sky Garden is a sanctuary for patients, families, doctors and administrators within this 23 story Children’s Hospital. The commitment to this sky garden was built upon a growing body of scientific research which links access to natural light and contemplative spaces to reduced patient recovery time.

Now we’re doing a project in Portland, Oregon, collaging different kinds of metals into a kind of quilt–copper, steel polished, stainless–creating a gateway with that. We always do artistic renderings of a project in all seasons…Like the Flex Fence in Lincoln (photo below), that’ a project where we really thought about what that landscape would look like throughout the seasons. It’s woven into this native landscape as a tapestry but in the winter it becomes the star, when the entire landscape is white. Henry is the Marketing Director at MYKD and oversees our research wing of our studio.

Early life and education

Heejung holds a master’s in landscape architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. This feature is meant to help with way finding and create a strong identity for the hospital, Mikyoung Kim proffered. Mikyoung Kim further noted that the green master plan is fully ADA-compliant and takes into account neurodiverse patients. The landscape architects designed for the full range of emotional, cognitive, and sensory experiences. Guiding principles behind the healing gardens are stress reduction and mental restoration.

The green spaces also, according to Mikyoung Kim, were conceived to foster social support; provide privacy; and offer positive distractions through artwork, natural elements, and opportunities for discovery and play. The architects added that the healing spaces could reduce the amount of time patients stay at the hospital. From the beginning I have been interested in landscape as a vehicle for positive change.

Her studio was named by Fast Company as one of the world's most innovative architecture firms. Phase one of the project kicked off in 2018 when the first exterior healing garden was finished. From there, interior gardens were inserted into Hale Medical Tower to provide year-round sanctuaries for Boston Children’s Hospital’s most vulnerable patients. The garden gives each patient, their family and caregiver green space that’s easily accessible from their hospital room.

In 2019, Mikyoung Kim took home an AN Best of Design Award for the project in the Unbuilt – Landscape category. I think that the world becomes a better place when designers invest a lifetime of practice, like in music, in finding a voice that brings whimsy, resiliency, and transformation to our everyday lives. My advice is the same for everyone — care about something, work on things that are beyond short-term rewards, and work hard for the people who have entrusted you with their future environment. When I was in college at Oberlin Conservatory, I developed tendonitis in my left wrist and arm and had to pause all work that I was doing on the instrument. At that time, I was so grateful to have the opportunity to take other classes in the college and began to study environmental art, sculpture, and art history. I was fascinated by both the land art movement as well as work by Noguchi who worked in more urban environments.

I think that my studio is very much like a studio in school in that we try to practice the open engagement of ideas. It’s really a healthy reminder for designers to have young people around that keep your ideas fresh, so the mind is limber. I think it’s every easy for designers to become predictable or stale and that’s probably my biggest fear. It’s very much like Providence, where people use it as a gathering space, and both projects transformed the city.

Our Team

She is known for culturally significant designs that serve as a powerful tool to celebrate the beauty of the collective human experience. Mikyoung’s diverse background in design, music and sculpture has shaped her body of humanistic work, blurring the boundaries between the landscape, ecology and architecture. From large scale urban and waterfront parks to botanic gardens, her work reflects a deep commitment to memorable place making that captures the public imagination. Driven by a philosophy of “nature, man and spirit as one,” Turenscape projects amount to over 300 ecological cities and 1,000 completed projects in China alone.

The sonic world was a language that I intuitively understood at a very young age and loved as a world to escape to. I started playing piano when I was five years old and it was something that I did very seriously, practicing many hours a day. From the Hudson Valley and the Berkshires to British Columbia and Bozeman, Chloe finds inspiration for design in the regional ecologies of the places she has lived. Chloe focuses her work on resilience and on honoring the local histories and ecologies.

While at Harvard, she was an Olmsted Scholar and received the Norman T. Newton Prize and the Jacob Weidenman Prize. The California-based hairstylist has followed the example of her mother and two grandmothers, who were hairstylists. Trained at Vidal Sassoon Academy and Dudley Cosmetology University in North Carolina, Kimble's clients include names such as Beyoncé, Shakira, Mary J. Blige, Zendaya, Kelly Rowland, Storm Reid and Brandy. Kimble has also developed her haircare product range, Kim Kimble Signature Collection and operates a full-service salon, Kimble Hair Studio in West Hollywood. Her work has been featured in a range of magazines including Vanity Fair, Allure, InStyle, Essence, Glamour and Vogue. "I hope that I can inspire more people in other ways [from this]. Creativity comes from within, and we've all got it." I actually don’t think of metal as a rigid material because it can bend, you can melt it, heat it, form it, mold it, cut it, perforate it. But I understand that certain kinds of metal have a quality some people would say lacks warmth because of lack of shininess.

Included in the exhibit are four recreations of wigs Lil' Kim wore in the late '90s and early 2000s, done by her then-hairstylist, Dionne Alexander. Alexander, now based in Dallas, was part of a team that included stylist Misa Hylton and makeup artist Nzingha. The three worked with Kim and unwittingly created the aesthetic blueprint female rappers still strictly adhere to. Teaching really taught me to love engagement and learn that other people have these ideas that can open a door in your mind.

Included in the lineup is a charcoal-colored wig with dark-blue highlights, with a velvety black zipper boasting rhinestone teeth cutting across it. She wore the original in a strawberry blond hue for her 2001 "In the Air Tonite" music video. "She was not afraid to change. I could bring five different wigs in, and she'd love and want to wear all of them. It was no problem, I didn't get a lot of pushback. It was the best thing ever — I was able to express my creativity."

He specializes in marketing and business development and oversees both internal an external communication developing strategies for brand building and team management. She was named by Architecture Digest as an AD Innovator and is a Fellow with the American Society of Landscape Architects.

Emmett is passionate about working with people to better their communities through design. He enjoys the creative process and believes first and foremost the design must be effective and address the problems at hand. At MYKD, Emmett helps to guide a team of designers on variety of projects from the Texas Medical Center research campuses to urban infill and public park spaces in downtown Boston. Established in 1988, Michel Desvigne Paysagiste enjoys collaborations on premier projects such as the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis with Herzog & de Meuron and the Dallas Center for the Performing Arts with Norman Foster and REX/OMA.

Her diverse background in design and sculpture has shaped her body of work, blurring the boundaries between landscape architecture and environmental art. From children’s playgrounds to city parks and urban master plans, her work reflects a deep commitment to placemaking that captures the public imagination. Headquartered in London, the firm has over 35 years of experience designing gardens, plazas, parks, institutional-plus-corporate landscapes and public installations. The firm situates itself at the intersection of landscape, public art and urbanism, believing that the urban landscape acts as a platform upon which an artful synergy of human and natural environments occurs.
