In a wet print, designs are dyed onto the fabric through a printing press, and then heated or steamed depending on the fabric in order to cure the ink. The fabric is then washed and framed to the width and thickness the customer desires. This process produces durable, long lasting patterns, while retaining the texture and quality of the fabric that the design is printed on. Sublimation printing is currently our most popular method of textile printing that allows customers to print on polyester fabrics at lower quantities. In a sublimation printing process, the customer’s design is printed on specially coated heat transfer paper via a sublimation printer. The paper is then heat pressed onto the fabric to create a beautiful and vibrant pattern.

You’ll notice when you roll the ink out that it has a much different viscosity than regular paint. Then use the soft rubber brayer (the roller), to bring the ink down. It will say it’s for fabric use right on the tube, like this one for example. Use as many of the different size options as you find necessary, depending on your design. There are some downfalls with using oil-based inks, and personally, I don’t think they’re worth the extra effort (which is why I only use water-based block printing inks now). Block Printing 101: How to Block Print Fabric
Keep an inspiration library around for when you’re getting ready to design! This can be as simple as taking some photos and keeping them in a folder on your phone, or ripping pages from old magazines and making a dedicated place for them. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to come up with a design that is super complex and detailed for your first attempt. Block printing really is one of those mediums that shines in its simplicity.

Loved for its folksy charm and vibrant colors, hand-block-printed fabric is a beautiful way to bring life to your home as summer approaches and it’s easy to do yourself. A big reason for this is because block printing creates a beautiful textured design as it’s being printed. Simple designs and patterns tend to highlight this effect a lot more which is why I encourage all my students to do a little less instead of more. If you’re using traditional block printing ink, let the surface air dry for 24 hours before using (this will set the ink). Look at the white negative space that is created when it is repeated. These negative spaces can be really interesting when working with small patterns and can be filled with smaller shapes such as dots or stars. Cover your table with padding and an old sheet to create a soft surface to print on. When it comes to caring for your fabrics, there’s not much to it.
